Town reviews permits for Council member Becker's home remodel
Beach fencing, a Forest Beach closure, four honorees and two dates worth saving.
Ward 4 voters pick a council member in less than three weeks. Meanwhile, town staff are looking into permits for work on one candidate's house on Bradley Circle.
Questions about a large remodel at Council member Tamara Becker's house on Bradley Circle came to a head at Tuesday's (Oct. 13) Town Council meeting. Councilman Steve Alfred said the required permit for the work was never purchased. Becker says the contractors she hired never obtained the permits and she did not know. She has since received a permit, and the town is still reviewing the case. She is also pressing Town Manager Marc Orlando to have homeowners, not only builders, sign building permits. Mayor Alan Perry told residents the council won't meddle in staff's handling of the case; issuing permits is an administrative staff job. Becker recused herself from Tuesday's votes on ordinance changes affecting Bradley Circle because of the review. Rick Ross is challenging her for the Ward 4 seat on Nov. 3.
Sand fencing goes up on renourished beaches this month
Fences are going up between Tower Beach Club and Seaside Sparrow Road, from Coligny Beach to Shipyard/Sonesta Resort, in Palmetto Dunes between Captain's Walk and Armada Street, at Singleton Beach, between Burkes and Bradley beaches, and along the Fish Haul Beach Park shoreline. Work began Oct. 5 and should be done by month's end. The fences stand about four feet tall, use untreated wood slats and are angled to trap sand. July's renourishment spread about 2.4 million cubic yards of sand over roughly 9.2 miles of beach, and waves, tides and storms keep moving it, which the town calls normal. Fences and plants help the dunes hold that sand. Planting should start in early December and wrap up in spring 2027. Beach access routes stay open, but expect light equipment and vehicles; follow posted signs and use caution near work areas.
Tanglewood Drive work expected to last about four weeks
Homes and businesses north of the Tanglewood Drive closure can still be reached from Nassau Street. Tanglewood and the pathway beside it at South Forest Beach Drive shut down Oct. 5 for construction at 2 Tanglewood Drive. The closure runs 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, and detours are set up for drivers and pathway users. In a separate effort, the town collected traffic data on South Forest Beach Drive, North Forest Beach Drive and Pope Avenue Oct. 6 to 9. That data feeds an engineering study looking for possible safety fixes in the Forest Beach corridors. A study is a first step, not a set of approved changes.
Four residents receive the Mayor's Honored Islander Award
Dave Peck, Kevin Naughten, Joe Rowey and Dr. Roselle L. Wilson were recognized at this week's Town Council meeting, after a luncheon with Mayor Alan Perry last month. Perry said they "show up, roll up their sleeves, and put others first." Peck, a local businessman, helped launch the Island Recreation Association's Jeep Island event in 2016 and still volunteers there. His fundraising has helped bring in more than $350,000 in total for the association's Children's Scholarship Fund, which helps kids get into recreation programs and childcare. Naughten volunteers with the sheriff's office Southern Command, Fire Rescue headquarters and events such as the RBC Heritage. Rowey, immediate past president of the Van Landingham Rotary Club, leads fundraisers and helps deliver 100 food baskets at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Wilson, a retired education administrator, served on the town's comprehensive plan committee and the boards of the Coastal Discovery Museum and Hilton Head Island Gullah Museum.
